Example Tarot reading: The
Celtic Cross
I use the Celtic cross for most of my readings, as it provides a good overview of a situation. However, there are other spreads which I also use to give further details and provide direct advice from the cards. See the other examples for more information.
Position 1 and 2: the basis of the issue. Position 3 and 4: the past, events leading up to the present situation. Position 5 and 6: the future, events which will happen soon. Position 7: self - how you feel at the present time. Position 8: environment - outside influences. Position 9: hopes and fears. Position 10: the outcome - what will come of the matter in a few months.
This is a reading for a mature lady asking about her career.
Basis: The Aeon Princess of Disks The Aeon card appears when we are on the brink of an important change. Indeed, the client felt she was at a very important point in her career, when long-term plans were beginning to come together and exciting opportunities were beginning to present themselves. The Princess of Disks represents her daughter, to whom she is very close and also very concerned about. It is clear that her daughter is an obstacle, in that the client feels she must put her child before her career. Past: Fortune 2 of Disks - Change The client's past has been very up-and-down, with chance encounters leading to work (she is self-employed), and a period of financial uncertainty. Self: Knight of Cups The Knight of Cups represents the fiery part of water, and as such he is a dreamer with a strong imagination and many good ideas, but lacking the strength to bring them into reality. The client feels she has many good ideas, but struggles to actualise them, due to her own doubt of her abilities and financial constraints. Environment: 4 of Disks - Power The image for this card is a fortress, very strong and well-defended but with an empty centre. This is how the client feels working from home - she is safe and secure, but also feels trapped and sick of being in the house. Hopes and Fears: The Hermit The Hermit represents our own inner wisdom, which the client knows she must follow. However, the Hermit also shows a period of being alone, as our greatest wisdom comes through introspection, necessitating withdrawal from the hustle and bustle of life. As a single parent, loneliness is a constant source of distress to the client. This shows how the querent both hopes and fears the qualities represented by the Hermit, that is, following her own inner wisdom despite the isolation this entails. Future: 10 of Disks - Wealth 9 of Wands - Swiftness The 10 of Disks shows the client will soon receive a sum of money. The Nine of Wands indicates a period of activity, perhaps where a project will be in its final stages before completion. Outcome: The Universe This is one of the best cards in the Tarot, particularly in this position. It shows that within a few months a brilliant opportunity will come up for the client, and that all of her hard work will be rewarded.
Overall, we can see that she is concerned about her finances and her daughter, feels trapped in her current environment and fears isolation. However, she will soon come into some money and a fantastic opportunity will present itself after a period of activity.
