The value of traditional
astrology Most people today take their first steps in astrology via the kind of "pop astrology" found in high street bookstores (as I did). This is a shame. There is so much more to astrology than "You're a Leo, he's a Pisces, it'll never work", and yet most people remain blissfully unaware of the truth. For me, as I'm sure it has been for many others, finding out about the parallel world of traditional astrology happened by accident. As a "dreamy, otherworldly Pisces", I find the beauty of traditional astrology is in its intellectual rigour and the wholeness of its philosophy. Astrology is not a random assortment of myth, psychology and arbitrary associations. It's a system. I find this systematic approach to be a beautiful counterbalance to the "New Age" approach to divination. Yes, we need to develop our intuition. But we also need to develop our rational knowledge. How else will we be able to express our intuitions, to give our ideas form? Neither intuition nor the rational mind alone will suffice to show us "the middle way". This, for me, is one of the great lessons demonstrated by traditional astrology. One of the other important lessons stems from the fact that traditional astrological technique, unlike the modern equivalent, actually works. And that this, in itself, has value. The value of astrology goes far beyond "fortune-telling". To be shown that yes, you do belong in this world, and yes, the process of unfolding is indeed taking place: this is the importance of astrology. And more than that: through rising above all this process and motion, through seeing the unfolding, the bigger picture, we are offered the opportunity to move beyond it and arrive in a place of peace.
